Tennis fans are excited about young talent Joao Fonseca, but not everyone is convinced yet. Toni Nadal, who coached his nephew Rafael Nadal for years, has shared a very honest view. He made it clear that, in his eyes, Fonseca is still far from the level of legends like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.Fonseca has been one of the most talked-about young players on the ATP Tour. His strong baseline game and fearless style have helped him beat players like Arthur Fils and Alex Michelsen. He has also impressed in big tournaments like Miami. Still, Toni Nadal believes there is a big gap between promise and true greatness, and he did not hide that feeling.

Toni Nadal compares Joao Fonseca with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and points out clear gap

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Toni Nadal shared what he saw when he watched Fonseca play in Miami.

He said, “I saw his game in Miami. I’ll be honest: I didn’t feel like I saw a very great player. From the level of an Alcaraz, an exceptional player.”He then explained how early signs of greatness were clear when he first saw top players years ago. “I remember that with Rafael, as soon as we saw Djokovic for the first time, we knew that he would become No. 1. When we trained with Del Potro at 18, we knew that he would join the top 10.

Federer also knew that Nadal would eventually dominate him.”Toni Nadal made his stance very clear when he added, “I don’t feel that with Fonseca or Mensik. At Fonseca, I still see significant gaps to reach this level. He’s a very good player, but I don’t see him going that high.”Even with this criticism, Fonseca’s journey is still building. The young Brazilian has already shown that he can compete at a high level. And interestingly, he has always looked up to the same legends he is now being compared to.In an earlier interview with the ATP Tour, Fonseca spoke about meeting Rafael Nadal during a tournament in Rio. It was a moment he will not forget. He said, “Rafa is a legend. I’m a Roger fan, but I also love Rafa. My coach is a Rafa fan. My phone unlock screen is Rafa with a sentence. It has been a pleasure to meet him.”He also added, “Eleven titles in a season is just insane. I will try to do the same.”That meeting gave him extra motivation. While Toni Nadal may not be fully convinced yet, Fonseca clearly believes in his own path and is working to reach that top level step by step.
