A woman woke up with strange marks on her chest and turned to the internet for answers. What started as a simple question on Reddit soon turned into an urgent health concern, with people urging her to seek immediate medical attention, potentially for a life-threatening condition.
Strange bite marks
A woman posted a photo of the ‘bite marks’ she found on her chest upon waking in the morning. She described the two small, round, red marks as ‘bite marks’. The raised lesions immediately sparked speculation on Reddit, and people proposed various theories about their origin. While some suggested they could be insect bites, others warned about serious health implications if she did not seek medical help.Waking up to unusual wounds or marks on your body can be unnerving, and most people share photos online hoping to find a potential cause.
That is exactly what this woman did. “Woke up with these bite marks on my chest,” she said, as she posted the image of the injury on Reddit.
Initial theories: Spider or bug?
Reddit users shared their suggestions and theories on what might have been the cause. “Spider,” one said, while another agreed: “My vote is also spider; I have also gotten spider bites in my sleep; need not be a wolf spider.”Some even found the ‘spider’ comments amusing and referred to the beloved comic-book and film franchise Spider-Man, who is famously bitten by a radioactive spider, leading to his supernatural powers.
“Do you wear glasses? You might not need them any more,” one said.
Rabies concern
There were also serious comments urging the woman to seek medical attention. “Public health inspector here. Please make sure it’s not a bat. If there’s even a possibility, you need rabies shots,” one user wrote. The woman reacted to this post: “I looked all over my house and couldn’t find any signs of a bat. My apartment is pretty small, so I would think I would notice it in the morning, at least when I woke up. Should I still get it?”She added, “We didn’t have any windows open, and I don’t ever see or hear any bats in our area.
I just saw a news story last year of a bat in our town that tested positive after biting someone.”Another Reddit user urged the woman to visit a doctor immediately. “That last part would probably take me to the doctor, just in case.”Rabies is a fatal medical emergency. According to the NHS, rabies is a rare but serious infection usually caught from the bite or scratch of an infected animal. It is a serious public health problem in over 150 countries and territories, mainly in Asia and Africa, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
This viral zoonotic tropical disease causes tens of thousands of deaths annually, with 40% occurring in children under 15.“It’s almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but vaccination and early treatment can prevent it,” the NHS warns.
One user claiming to be a nurse agreed: “OP [original poster], I’m an ER nurse. You can ask your doctor about it, since your town has had rabid bats.”Another suggested getting a rabies shot: “Go get a rabies shot.
Your town has bats and a bat tested positive. This is an emergency—do not wait. You only have a limited time to get a rabies shot. Please go.”However, a third user emphasised that getting a rabies shot might not be that simple. “Idk [I don’t know] where OP lives, but if this were me, I would be refused the shots if I went to the doctor or ER with OP’s story. I’d be labelled a hypochondriac and sent away, potentially asked to follow up with a therapist.”The woman replied: “This is exactly it. I’ve gotten rabies shots before for an encounter with a stray dog, and it took so much convincing to get it—not to mention it was expensive even with insurance. I don’t want to have to go through that again if it’s not absolutely necessary.”This incident emphasises the importance of seeking medical advice rather than asking for opinions online, as the latter can only worsen the situation.
