US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim that he helped stop the India-Pakistan conflict by threatening to impose massive tariffs on both countries, saying he warned them that they would lose access to trade with the United States if the fighting continued.

Recalling his intervention, Trump said he had urged the two nuclear-armed neighbours to stop fighting and warned them of severe economic consequences if they failed to do so.

“You stop India and Pakistan, two nuclear nations," Trump said, describing his conversation with the two sides.

“I said, ‘Fellas, if you guys are going to do that, you’re not going to trade with the United States. I’m going to put massive tariffs on both of you, 250 per cent, so you won’t be able to do any business,’" he added.
