OpenAI’s two most popular platforms, ChatGPT and the coding assistant Codex, have suffered a widespread outage, leaving thousands of students, developers, and professionals stranded mid-task.
The disruption has hit both web and mobile versions of the apps. According to Downdetector, a service that tracks website outages, the technical glitch has impact over 3000 users in the US and India.As per user complaints on downdetector, more than 80% (82% in India, 86% in the US) are facing problem in accessing the ChatGPT platform. When members of the Times of India tech team accessed ChatGPT on the web, the platform responded normally.The outage wasn’t limited to a single feature as users reported failures across the board, including the main ChatGPT interface, the mobile app, and the Codex system used by programmers to write and debug code.
OpenAI is investigating the issue
OpenAI’s official status page confirmed the disruption shortly after the reports began to spike. The company stated that the issue is currently “under investigation,” though they have yet to provide a specific reason for the crash or a timeline for when services will return to normal.
“We’re currently experiencing issues,” the company said on the status page.“Users unable to load ChatGPT, Codex and API Platform. We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services,” the company added.Moreover, users may have also encountered issues with ChatGPT Business, the company said.“Users may encounter issue with ChatGPT Business after upgrade or adding new seats for up to an hour. We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” the company noted about an issue which is ongoing for 8 hours (at the time of writing).
Anthropic outage in recent days
The issue with OpenAI’s popular apps comes days after Anthropic faced multiple outages in a span of 3 days. Anthropic’s Claude and APIs were down last week, leaving thousands of users unable to access the AI platform.
