Driving training in Sambalpur to empower SHG women

Women learn riding two-wheelers in Sambalpur

Sambalpur: In a significant step towards women empowerment, the transport department in collaboration with the Red Cross, launched a driving training programme for 100 self-help group (SHG) women here on Friday.As part of the month-long initiative, participants will be trained to drive both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The programme aims to make women self-reliant and open up new avenues for employment, while also reducing their dependence on others for daily commuting.Speaking on the initiative, Sambalpur regional transport officer Ramdas Tudu emphasised the importance of driving skills for women in today’s world.

“Women are progressing in every field. Learning to drive is essential as it not only boosts confidence but also creates employment opportunities. This initiative will help them become independent,” he said.Beneficiaries have expressed enthusiasm about the training. Shivani Sahu, one of the participants, said, “Driving was always my dream. With the administration’s support, I am now learning to drive. Soon, I will be able to drive on my own and support my family financially.” In the first phase, 100 women are undergoing training, and the administration plans to extend the programme to more women in the future.
