Princess Eléonore turns 18: Inside the life of Belgium’s youngest royal

Princess Eléonore of Belgium, the youngest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde recently celebrated her debut, turning 18th on April 16, 2026. The youngest royal of the Belgian royal house stunned in a Hollywood-style black dress adorned with a white floor-length shawl draped across her shoulder.‘Princess Eléonore is turning 18!’ the Belgian royal family wrote on their official social media accounts. ‘A special milestone and a wonderful occasion to share some pictures of her with you.’

Who is Princess Eléonore?

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are the reigning king and queen of Belgium. The royal couple has reigned since July 21, 2013, following the abdication of King Albert II, due to health reasons.The couple got married on December 4, 1999 and have four children: Princess Elisabeth, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eléonore.

The princess is the youngest member of the royal household and is still a student, therefore a rare sight in official engagements.Born on April 16, 2008, she was baptised in the chapel of Ciergnon Castle in the Ardennes, and her godparents included Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and Princess Claire of Belgium.The princess studied at St John Berhcmans College in Brussels before transferring to the Heilig Hart College in Wezembeek-Oppem where she was educated in Dutch.

In 2023, she enrolled at the International School of Brussels and has been studying there. She is fluent in English, French, and Dutch. Along with being a keen violinist and has hobbies of skiing, sailing and playing tennis. In her spare time, she regularly volunteers in support of the vulnerable. During the coronavirus pandemic, she had conversations with isolated elderly over the phone and also baked for the homeless.Currently, she is preceded to the throne by her elder sister Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, who is the heir apparent.Her birthday came at the same week as her father turned 66, and the duo recreated throwback photograph they took 10 years ago outside their house in Laeken. The recreation was a reminder of how much the princess has grown up over the years.In contrast to other young royals across the globe, Princess Eléonore has maintained a quiet life, away from public eyes. She has grown up away from intense media attention yet carries a sense of poise and awareness to her stature. Now, it remains to be seen how she will grow up to be in life.
