Veteran actor turns emotional at short film screening

Veteran Bengali actor Nimai Ghosh turned visibly emotional during a recent screening of the short film Only Silence Remains, as his portrayal of a solitary, ageing man struck a deeply personal chord. According to attendees, Ghosh had tears in his eyes while watching the film on the big screen, with the character’s loneliness and isolation closely echoing his own lived reality. The moment quickly became a talking point among viewers present at the screening. Directed by Pavel Paul, the film relies on minimal dialogue and subdued storytelling. Speaking after the screening, Paul said it was an “honour” to cast Ghosh and admitted the final outcome exceeded his expectations.

He added that the team is hoping to take the film to more screenings across India.

Audience members praised Ghosh’s performance, with several noting the rarity of seeing him in a lead role. One viewer remarked that it was the first time he had played a protagonist and commended his energy, while another recalled his earlier appearance in Janmabhumi. Ghosh, however, found it difficult to explain his performance, particularly the physically demanding portions of the film. He described Only Silence Remains as “a complete film” that “says a lot by saying very little,” adding that the character may have driven him to deliver the role. The short film is now expected to be showcased at additional screenings, with early reactions indicating strong audience engagement driven by its quiet, introspective narrative and Ghosh’s central performance.
